Oil on Fine Linen on Board
John Shaw Neilson was a lyrical poet, born in South Australia in 1872 and died in Melbourne 1942. He worked in many labouring jobs from the Mallee to Eildon and Glenmaggie during the Great Depression. The mouse plague of 1917 resulted in many of his poems being eaten. His education was mainly from the school of life. There is an annual art competition of works inspired by his poetry. This is a study to illustrate his poem
Roses Three.
